Newspaper cuttings, circa 1770.

Manuscript of a collection of about a thousand newspaper clippings, primarily from the Middlesex Journal, but also from other periodicals such as St James's Chronicle and the Theatrical Intelligence. Many of the clippings are lighthearted or satirical, including poems, anecdotes about society notables, epigrams, and epitaphs. These include poems on women's behavior and a poetic epistle from Henry Fielding to Sir Robert Walpole. Other items include news and summaries of new plays and reviews of the theatrical performers; and numerous pieces on America, including a dialogue between a Virginian and a New-Hampshire man and a piece titled On the present American system. The collection also contains reports of petty robberies, accidents, swindlers, and public disorder. Some names have been filled in where the newspaper left them blank, including one anecdote on the late Duke of Bedford; occasionally names have been underlined, or dates handwritten on the clippings. The clippings have been pasted over pages of an account book with at least one date of 1725.
